Sermorelin

The original growth hormone-releasing peptide, and the gentlest place to start.

Sermorelin is a synthetic copy of the first 29 amino acids of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), the signal your hypothalamus sends to the pituitary to release growth hormone. It was once an FDA-approved medication for children with growth hormone deficiency and has been used in adult wellness medicine for decades, which gives it the longest safety record of any growth hormone peptide.

Dr. Loera often recommends sermorelin as a first growth hormone protocol, for older adults, and for anyone who wants a measured, physiologic approach. It restores the overnight growth hormone pulses that fade with age, supporting sleep, energy, recovery and body composition without the intensity of stronger combinations. See how it fits into our anti-aging and body recomposition plans.

How it helps

What sermorelin does

It doesn’t add a hormone; it asks your pituitary to do its job the way it did a couple of decades ago.

Restores natural pulses

Sermorelin prompts your own growth hormone release in the overnight rhythm your body is built for.

Better sleep

Bedtime dosing deepens slow-wave sleep, which is usually the first change people notice.

Energy and recovery

Restored growth hormone and IGF-1 support faster recovery and steadier daytime energy.

Body composition

Over months, it supports lean mass and fat metabolism, especially with resistance training.

Preserves feedback loops

Because it works upstream, the pituitary still responds to the body’s own “enough” signals, limiting over-treatment.

Long track record

Decades of clinical use and a former FDA approval make it the most established peptide in this category.

Sermorelin vs. CJC-1295 / Ipamorelin vs. tesamorelin

  • Sermorelin is the gentlest: a modest, physiologic growth hormone pulse with the fewest side effects. Best for first-timers, older adults and healthy-aging goals.
  • CJC-1295 / Ipamorelin produces a stronger pulse by combining two signals. The usual choice when recovery, sleep and body composition are all priorities.
  • Tesamorelin is the most potent GHRH analog and the one with trial data on visceral fat.

Plenty of people start on sermorelin and stay there; others move up after a few months once we see how they respond.

Sermorelin vs. HGH

Synthetic HGH replaces growth hormone directly, which can push IGF-1 too high and bring side effects like joint pain, fluid retention, carpal tunnel and insulin resistance. Sermorelin works one step upstream, so your pituitary still controls how much is released and when. Results are steadier and slower, and the safety margin is wider. For most adults with age-related decline, that trade is the right one.

What a protocol looks like

Sermorelin is injected subcutaneously at bedtime, typically five to seven nights a week, on an empty stomach so the growth hormone pulse isn’t blunted by insulin. Protocols run three to six months with IGF-1, fasting glucose and HbA1c checked at baseline and around three months. Many patients cycle a few months on and a month off, or settle into a maintenance schedule once they feel good.

Candidates

Is sermorelin right for me?

Often a good fit

  • Adults noticing lighter sleep, lower energy or slower recovery with age
  • First-time users who want a gentle, well-established option
  • Older adults or anyone who prefers a measured approach
  • Low-normal IGF-1 on labs with symptoms to match
  • Comfortable with a nightly self-injection and periodic bloodwork

Let’s talk first

  • Active cancer or cancer treatment in the last five years
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or pre-diabetes without monitoring
  • Untreated sleep apnea or an underactive thyroid (we’ll address those first)
  • Competing athletes subject to anti-doping rules

The process

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Consultation and labs

We review symptoms, goals and history, and check IGF-1, blood sugar, thyroid and relevant hormones.

  2. Step 2

    Your protocol

Dose, nights per week and course length, with sleep and training guidance to match.

  3. Step 3

    First dose and teaching

Injection technique demonstrated in the office; it takes about a minute at bedtime afterward.

  4. Step 4

    Three to six months

Prescriptions ship from a licensed compounding pharmacy. Keep a simple log of sleep and energy.

  5. Step 5

    Reassess

Repeat labs and a check-in at about three months guide whether to continue, adjust or step up to a stronger protocol.

Good to know

Sermorelin questions, answered

What is sermorelin used for?

Sermorelin is used to restore natural growth hormone release in adults, supporting sleep, energy, recovery, body composition and healthy aging. It is often the first growth hormone peptide a patient tries because it is gentle and well established.

Is sermorelin the same as HGH?

No. HGH is the hormone itself. Sermorelin is a releasing hormone that prompts your pituitary to make and release your own growth hormone in natural pulses, which keeps the body’s feedback controls intact and lowers the risk of over-treatment.

How long does sermorelin take to work?

Sleep often improves within one to three weeks. Energy, recovery and mood follow over four to eight weeks. Changes in body composition typically take three months or more of consistent use.

Is sermorelin FDA approved?

Sermorelin was previously FDA-approved for growth hormone deficiency in children (as Geref), but the brand was discontinued for commercial reasons. Today it is prescribed off-label through compounding pharmacies, and availability can change as regulations evolve. Dr. Loera will confirm what can currently be prescribed.

What are the side effects of sermorelin?

They are usually mild: injection-site redness, flushing or dizziness right after the dose, headache, or mild fluid retention. Blood sugar can rise in susceptible people, which is why we monitor it. Serious side effects are rare.

Sermorelin or CJC-1295 / Ipamorelin, which should I choose?

Sermorelin is milder and a good first protocol, especially for older adults or anyone who wants to start gently. CJC-1295/Ipamorelin produces a stronger pulse and is usually chosen when recovery and body composition are priorities. Many people start on sermorelin and reassess after three months.

Do I need bloodwork?

Yes. We check IGF-1, fasting glucose and HbA1c before starting and around three months in. It’s how we confirm the protocol is working and still safe.

Can I take sermorelin with testosterone or other hormone therapy?

Often yes. Growth hormone peptides and hormone replacement address different signals and are frequently combined. We coordinate the plan and monitor labs so nothing is overdone.

Is sermorelin banned in sports?

Yes. Growth hormone-releasing peptides are prohibited under WADA rules. If you compete in a tested sport, tell us before starting.

How much does sermorelin cost?

It depends on dose and course length. Peptide therapy is self-pay and not covered by insurance. You’ll get a clear quote at your consultation, and our price list is always available.
