Mitochondrial Health & Longevity

Peptides that work on the energy factories inside your cells, for stamina now and healthier aging later.

Mitochondria are the parts of your cells that turn food and oxygen into usable energy. You have trillions of them, and with age, stress and inactivity they become fewer, less efficient and leakier. The result shows up as fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix, slower metabolism, longer recovery, and many of the changes we file under “getting older.”

Mitochondrial peptides are a newer branch of longevity medicine aimed directly at that machinery. MOTS-c and humanin are peptides your mitochondria make themselves, in declining amounts as you age. SS-31 protects the mitochondrial membrane where energy is produced. Epitalon acts on telomere maintenance and circadian rhythm. Dr. Loera uses them, often alongside NAD+ infusions and a Biological Age Assessment, for people who want to feel better now and invest in the long run.

How it helps

How mitochondrial and longevity peptides help

Most “anti-aging” targets the surface. These peptides target the energy supply that every tissue depends on.

More cellular energy

MOTS-c and SS-31 improve how efficiently mitochondria produce ATP, which you experience as stamina and quicker recovery.

Metabolic flexibility

MOTS-c acts like an exercise-mimetic, improving insulin sensitivity and the ability to burn fat for fuel.

Less oxidative damage

SS-31 stabilizes the inner mitochondrial membrane and reduces the free-radical leakage that damages cells over time.

Heart, muscle and brain support

The tissues with the highest energy demands benefit most from healthier mitochondria.

Longevity pathways

Epitalon supports telomerase activity and circadian rhythm; humanin is linked to cellular stress resistance and healthy aging in research.

Better training response

Improved mitochondrial function means more benefit from the same workouts, especially endurance work.

The peptides, briefly

  • MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA. It regulates metabolism and insulin sensitivity and rises naturally with exercise; levels fall with age.
  • SS-31 (elamipretide) binds cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane, protecting the energy-producing machinery from oxidative stress. It has been studied in heart failure and mitochondrial disease.
  • Humanin is another mitochondrial-derived peptide associated with cellular stress resistance; levels are notably high in long-lived people.
  • Epitalon is a short synthetic peptide modeled on a pineal gland extract. It supports telomerase activity, circadian rhythm and melatonin regulation.

Who tends to benefit most

The people who get the most from mitochondrial peptides are usually in one of three groups: adults in midlife and beyond with fatigue, slower metabolism or declining exercise tolerance; people recovering from a long illness or post-viral fatigue; and those already doing the fundamentals well who want to push healthy aging further. For all three, we measure where you’re starting so the results are more than a feeling.

Pairs well with

Candidates

Is mitochondrial and longevity peptide therapy right for me?

Often a good fit

  • Fatigue, low stamina or slow recovery that sleep and basic labs don’t explain
  • Slowing metabolism or rising blood sugar in midlife
  • Post-viral or post-illness fatigue
  • Already training and eating well, and wanting to invest in healthspan
  • Interested in measuring progress with labs and biological age testing

Let’s talk first

  • Active cancer or cancer treatment in the last five years (some longevity pathways need caution here)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Unexplained fatigue without a basic workup (thyroid, iron, B12, sleep apnea come first)
  • Uncontrolled diabetes without monitoring
  • Expecting a vial to substitute for exercise and sleep

The process

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Consultation and baseline

We review symptoms, history and goals, run labs and, when useful, a biological age and body composition assessment.

  2. Step 2

    Your protocol

Dr. Loera chooses the peptide or combination, dose and schedule, and pairs it with NAD+ or other support where it adds value.

  3. Step 3

    Teaching

First injection in the office; most mitochondrial peptides are given a few times a week at home.

  4. Step 4

    Eight to twelve weeks

Prescriptions ship from a licensed compounding pharmacy. Track energy, exercise tolerance and sleep in a simple log.

  5. Step 5

    Reassess

Follow-up labs and measurements guide whether to continue, cycle off or adjust the plan.

Good to know

Mitochondrial and longevity questions, answered

What are mitochondrial peptides?

They are short peptides that either come from the mitochondria themselves (MOTS-c, humanin) or act on them directly (SS-31). They support how efficiently cells produce energy, how well they handle oxidative stress and how the body manages metabolism, all of which decline with age.

What is MOTS-c used for?

MOTS-c is used for energy, metabolic health and exercise capacity. It improves insulin sensitivity and fat metabolism in a way that mimics some of the effects of exercise, which is why it’s often chosen for midlife fatigue, slowing metabolism and rising blood sugar.

What does SS-31 do?

SS-31, also called elamipretide, protects the inner mitochondrial membrane where energy is produced. It reduces oxidative damage and improves ATP output. It has been studied in heart failure, mitochondrial disease and age-related muscle decline.

What is epitalon?

Epitalon is a four-amino-acid peptide modeled on a pineal gland extract. Research links it to telomerase activation, improved circadian rhythm and melatonin regulation. It is usually taken in short courses once or twice a year.

How soon will I feel a difference?

Energy and exercise tolerance often improve within two to four weeks on MOTS-c or SS-31. Metabolic and lab changes take longer; we typically reassess at eight to twelve weeks.

Are longevity peptides FDA approved?

No. MOTS-c, SS-31, humanin and epitalon are not FDA-approved and are prescribed off-label through compounding pharmacies. Availability changes as regulations evolve, and Dr. Loera will confirm what can currently be prescribed.

Is this the same as NAD+ therapy?

They’re complementary. NAD+ is a coenzyme mitochondria need to make energy; mitochondrial peptides improve the function and resilience of the mitochondria themselves. Many longevity protocols combine the two.

What are the side effects?

They are generally mild: injection-site redness, occasional headache or fatigue in the first days, and for MOTS-c, sometimes a brief change in appetite. We monitor labs and adjust as needed.

Can I measure whether it’s working?

Yes. We track labs such as fasting glucose, insulin, lipids and inflammatory markers, along with body composition and, if you choose, biological age testing, so progress is in numbers as well as how you feel.

What does a mitochondrial protocol cost?

It depends on the peptides, dose and course length. Peptide therapy is self-pay and not covered by insurance. You’ll get a clear quote at your consultation; our price list is always available.
